In connection with the upcoming conference Borderlands facing a polycrisis in the 21st century. Resilience and future perspectives of cross-border relations, we are pleased to introduce you some of the speakers:

Jussi P. Laine is a professor at the Karelian Institute of the University of Eastern Finland. He also serves as president of the World Social Science Association (WSSA), an international organization representing the social sciences, and is a member of the steering group of the Committee on Political Geography of the International Geographical Association. In the years 2013-2021, he was the leader of the leading international organization dealing with borderland studies, the Association for Borderlands Studies. Jussi Laine is educated in social geography, but deals with borders and migration in a multidisciplinary way. The professor’s research interests include the subject of the European Union, economic development, international security and geopolitics.

Birte Wassenberg is a professor of contemporary history at the Faculty of Political Science (IEP) of the University of Strasbourg and member of the Institute for Historical Research of Raymond Poidevin at UMR Dynamiques européennes. In the years 1993-2006 she was responsible for cross-border cooperation in the Alsace Region. Professor Wassenberg’s research interests include border regions, Euroscepticism and the history of European organizations, especially the Council of Europe.

Emmanuel Brunet-Jailly is a professor in the School of Public Administration at the University of Victoria. He led the ‘Borders in Globalization’ partnership grant funded by the SSHRC (2012-2020, extended for 2021-2028) and co-directs the UVic’s European Studies program. His research focus on borders and urban borderlands within transborder spaces such as Canada-US, European Schengen area and Hong Kong/China. In his work he also cooperates with the executive authorities of different levels in Europe, North America and Hong Kong/China. His expertise includes city management, intergovernmental relations, border administration and border security.
